What does zinc do for skin?

What a finished product does depends on the exact zinc compound, its concentration, and the formula it sits in.
What zinc does in the body
Zinc is an essential trace mineral. The body cannot make it, so it comes from food. It is required for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes, and it plays a part in immune function, protein and DNA synthesis, cell signaling and division, and wound healing. Because so many processes rely on it, a shortage of zinc shows up in many tissues at once, and the skin is one of them.
Skin is in a constant state of renewal. New cells form in the lower epidermis, mature as they move upward, and are eventually shed. That turnover places a steady demand on zinc-dependent enzymes and proteins, which is one reason the skin holds a notable amount of the body's zinc, concentrated in the epidermis. Reviewers estimate the skin carries roughly five percent of total body zinc.
Zinc deficiency is where the connection to skin and hair is clearest. In children, deficiency can cause hair loss, delayed growth, and frequent infections. In older adults, it can slow wound healing. Not all zinc ingredients are the same
On an ingredient list, the word zinc is only half the name. Zinc is always bound to something else, and the partner changes how the compound behaves: whether it dissolves in water or stays as a solid particle, how much elemental zinc it contains, how it interacts with the rest of the formula, and what it has actually been studied for. Treating every zinc compound as one ingredient is the most common mistake in conversations about zinc and skin.
Zinc oxide is an insoluble white powder. It is the zinc form recognized in the United States as a sunscreen active ingredient and as an over-the-counter skin protectant active at 1 to 25 percent. It has been used for generations in diaper pastes. Zinc pyrithione is an antimicrobial compound used at about 1 percent in anti-dandruff shampoos. Zinc sulfate is a water-soluble salt that has been tested orally and topically for conditions such as warts and acne. Zinc PCA is a zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid that appears in cosmetics; there is comparatively little independent peer-reviewed clinical work on it.
Zinc gluconate, the form in AuraAnn Mineral Cream, is a water-soluble zinc salt. In the published literature it is best known as an oral supplement form and as an oral treatment studied for inflammatory acne. What topical zinc research has actually studied
Most of the topical zinc literature concerns a handful of compounds in specific settings. Zinc oxide has been studied as a physical sunscreen, as a soothing paste for diaper dermatitis, and in dressings for slow-healing ulcers. Zinc pyrithione has been studied in shampoo form for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Zinc sulfate solutions have been tested on warts and, in some older studies, on acne. Zinc acetate has been studied in combination with the antibiotic erythromycin for acne.
The results are honestly mixed. Zinc oxide sunscreen and zinc pyrithione shampoo have consistent support for their labeled uses. For diaper dermatitis, reviewers describe zinc oxide paste as a useful soothing agent but less effective than topical corticosteroids. In wound care, some trials of topical zinc preparations reported faster healing while others found no difference, so the record is inconsistent. For acne, reviewers note that much of the topical evidence involves zinc paired with an antibiotic, which makes zinc's own contribution hard to isolate, and that zinc salts overall appear equal to or less effective than standard tetracycline antibiotics.
Oral zinc gluconate deserves a specific note because it shares a name with the ingredient in AuraAnn. Skin: creams, serums, mists, and what contact time does and does not establish
Leave-on products such as creams and serums stay on the skin for hours; rinse-off products are on the skin for a minute or two; a mist sits somewhere in between depending on how much is applied and how fast it dries. Contact time matters because any ingredient needs time in contact with the skin surface before it can do anything at all. A long contact time is a precondition, not a result.
Contact time does not establish that a soluble zinc salt leaves the vehicle, that it stays in the outer skin in any particular amount, or that it changes anything once there. Reviews of topical zinc note that delivery depends heavily on the solubility of the specific compound and on how it interacts with everything else in the product. Those are formulation questions that can only be answered by testing the finished product, not by reading an ingredient list.

Hair and scalp: why dandruff and deficiency evidence does not transfer
Two lines of evidence connect zinc to hair, and neither transfers to a leave-on product with a different zinc compound. The first is zinc pyrithione in anti-dandruff shampoo. Its studied benefit comes from antimicrobial activity against Malassezia yeasts on the scalp, which are involved in dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. That activity belongs to the pyrithione compound, not to zinc in general. A shampoo or conditioner containing zinc gluconate, zinc PCA, or any other zinc salt has not been shown to do the same thing.
The second line is nutritional. Hair loss is a recognized sign of zinc deficiency in children, and some studies have found lower serum zinc in people with alopecia areata or telogen effluvium. But a review of vitamins and minerals in hair loss found the data on zinc levels are not homogenous, found supplementation trials that went both ways, and did not recommend routine zinc screening for common hair loss. The same review identified no human data on topical zinc for hair.

Lips and sun: zinc oxide versus every other zinc
In the United States, sunscreens are regulated as over-the-counter drugs, and only a specific list of active ingredients may be used. Zinc oxide is on that list. It works as a physical filter, sitting on the skin surface and absorbing and scattering ultraviolet light. The SPF number on a sunscreen label indicates the level of sunburn protection, a broad spectrum label indicates protection against both UVA and UVB, and the FDA recommends an SPF of at least 15. The FDA specifically reminds people that lips are a commonly missed spot and suggests an SPF lip balm.
None of that applies to other zinc compounds. Zinc gluconate, zinc PCA, zinc sulfate, and zinc pyrithione are not sunscreen actives and provide no measurable sun protection. A lip balm, mist, or cream that lists a zinc salt on its ingredient panel is not a sunscreen and should not be relied on as one. The phrase contains zinc never means SPF, and it never means protection from sunburn or skin damage.
The same distinction applies to over-the-counter skin protectant products. Zinc oxide, zinc acetate, and zinc carbonate are listed skin protectant actives at defined concentrations under the federal monograph. Zinc gluconate is not, and it carries no skin protectant claim. Why concentration, solubility, pH, vehicle, and stability matter
Zinc compounds do not act on the skin as an abstract mineral. What happens depends on the details of the formula. Stability adds a time dimension. A zinc salt that is present at bottling may interact with chelating agents, thickeners, or preservatives over months on a shelf. The monograph's permitted wording for colloidal oatmeal is that it temporarily protects and helps relieve minor skin irritation and itching due to rashes or eczema. That labeled statement belongs to the colloidal oatmeal, not to the zinc.
AuraAnn makes no zinc-specific outcome claim. The brand does not say that the zinc in the cream treats, heals, prevents, or improves any condition, changes any skin measurement, or adds a benefit on top of the labeled active.
