What does topical magnesium do?
Magnesium is essential in human biology, where it acts as a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems. That is nutritional science, not a skincare claim. Published review work concluded that promotion of transdermal magnesium is not scientifically supported. AuraAnn Mineral Cream contains magnesium aspartate as a formulation ingredient, and we make no health claim for it.
Magnesium in normal biology
Magnesium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements describes it as a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate a wide range of biochemical reactions, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Most of the magnesium in the body is held in bone and soft tissue, and magnesium status is managed largely through the gut and the kidneys.
That description is a statement about whole body physiology. It comes from research on what people eat and drink, and on what happens when intake stays too low over time. The route studied is the digestive tract, not the skin. When a reference like this says magnesium is involved in hundreds of reactions, it is describing internal biochemistry, not the behavior of a cream on the surface of the arm.
This distinction matters because the gap between the two is where most magnesium marketing goes wrong. A mineral can be genuinely essential to life and still have no demonstrated benefit when placed in a leave-on skincare product. Both things can be true at once, and honest writing has to hold them together rather than let one quietly stand in for the other.MG-01
The limits of transdermal and topical magnesium evidence
A review published in Nutrients in 2017, titled Myth or Reality, Transdermal Magnesium, examined the claims made for magnesium applied to the skin. The authors concluded that the promotion of transdermal magnesium was not scientifically supported. They pointed to healthy skin acting as a barrier, and to the small size and methodological weaknesses of the studies being cited in support of delivery through the skin.
Newer work has not overturned that conclusion. A 2017 pilot study in PLOS ONE gave 25 participants either a magnesium cream supplying 56 mg per day or a placebo cream for two weeks, then measured magnesium in blood and urine. The change in serum magnesium did not reach statistical significance across the whole group, and reached it only within a subgroup that excluded athletes. The authors themselves called for higher doses and longer durations before firm conclusions could be drawn.
A 2026 dermatology review reached a similar posture from the clinical side. It described real mechanistic interest in magnesium for skin, while stating plainly that the available clinical studies are limited by small sample sizes, differing formulations, and inconsistent outcome measures, and that larger randomized trials are needed to establish optimal formulations and dosing.
Taken together, this is a field with early signals and no settled answer. That is an honest and fairly ordinary place for a research area to sit. It is not, however, a basis for telling a customer that a cream will do something for them.MG-02, MG-04, MG-05
Different magnesium compounds and different vehicles
Magnesium is never used on its own. It is always paired with something else to form a salt, and the pairing changes how the ingredient behaves. Magnesium chloride is highly soluble in water and is the basis of most products marketed as magnesium oil, which is not an oil at all but a concentrated water solution. Magnesium sulfate is the compound sold as Epsom salt and is used mainly in baths. Magnesium aspartate, the form in AuraAnn Mineral Cream, pairs magnesium with the amino acid aspartic acid.
The vehicle matters as much as the compound. A bath is a dilute solution with whole body contact for a set number of minutes, followed by a rinse. A spray leaves a concentrated residue on the surface. A leave-on cream is an emulsion of oil and water that stays on the skin for hours and carries thickeners, emollients, and preservatives alongside the mineral. These are different products with different contact times and different physics, and evidence gathered with one does not transfer to the others.
This is why a study title has to be read closely. Research on soaking in a mineral rich solution is research on soaking. It says nothing directly about a cream, and a cream is not a shortcut to the same result.MG-02, MG-03
How a magnesium salt can affect a formula without being a proven benefit
There are real, measurable reasons a formulator pays attention to a magnesium salt, and none of them are consumer health benefits. Dissolved mineral salts raise the ionic strength of the water phase of an emulsion. That is a physical property of the mixture, and it has consequences the formulator has to design around.
One consequence is thickening behavior. Carbomer, which appears in the AuraAnn Mineral Cream ingredient list, builds viscosity through a polymer network that is sensitive to dissolved salts, and in this formula it is neutralized with triethanolamine. Mineral salts can also shift the pH of the water phase, influence how well the oil and water phases stay together over time and temperature, and change how the finished cream feels as it spreads and absorbs. Every one of those is a manufacturing and quality question.
We describe these as formulation facts, and we keep them separate from benefit language on purpose. Saying that an ingredient influences the texture and stability of a cream is a statement about the product in the jar. It is not a claim that the ingredient does anything for the person using it, and it should never be dressed up as one.MG-01

Skin, hair, and lips: what is and is not established
The clearest human data connecting magnesium to the skin surface comes from bathing research. In a 2005 study in the International Journal of Dermatology, participants with atopic dry skin bathed one forearm in a 5 percent Dead Sea salt solution and used the other forearm, bathed in tap water, as a control, over six weeks. The salt bathed forearm showed improved barrier measures, higher hydration, and reduced roughness and redness. The authors attributed part of this to magnesium.
That result is genuinely interesting and it is also tightly bounded. It is one bathing study, in a specific population, using a mixed sea salt solution rather than a single purified mineral, on a soak and rinse routine. It does not establish what a leave-on cream will do, it does not isolate magnesium from the other minerals present, and it cannot be carried across to a different product format.
For hair and lips the picture is thinner still. The trace element literature in skin biology has developed most substantially around zinc and copper, with well described roles in areas such as epithelial regeneration, antioxidant enzymes, and connective tissue synthesis. Magnesium does not feature prominently in that same body of skin disease work. There is no established topical magnesium benefit for scalp condition, hair quality, or lip comfort, and we will not imply one while our future formats are still in development.MG-03, MG-06, MG-05
Why systemic, sleep, recovery, and detox claims do not belong on a skincare page
Magnesium is heavily marketed for sleep, calm, muscle recovery, cramp relief, and detoxification. Those ideas travel easily because low magnesium status is a real clinical matter with real consequences, and because the language is appealing. The difficulty is that the supporting research sits almost entirely in dietary intake and oral supplementation, and the conclusions belong to that route.
Moving a claim from a supplement to a cream is not a small change of wording. It asserts that a meaningful amount of magnesium crosses the skin barrier and reaches the rest of the body, and that is exactly the assertion the 2017 Nutrients review found to be unsupported. Without that step established, every downstream claim about sleep, relaxation, recovery, or cramps loses its foundation.
Detox claims carry a further problem. They describe internal processes the body already carries out through the liver and kidneys, and they are not measurable outcomes of applying a cosmetic to the skin. AuraAnn does not make claims of this kind for any product, and the presence of a mineral in our ingredient list does not entitle us to borrow them.MG-01, MG-02
What testing AuraAnn would need before a magnesium-specific claim
A claim about magnesium in an AuraAnn product would have to be earned by testing the actual finished product, not by citing general magnesium biology. The study would need to compare the finished formula against the same formula made without the magnesium salt, so that any difference could be attributed to the mineral rather than to the base cream, which already contains well characterized ingredients such as colloidal oatmeal, glycerin, panthenol, and allantoin.
It would need enough participants to detect a real effect rather than noise, a control condition, outcome measures agreed before the study begins, and assessment by someone unaware of which product each participant received. The measures would have to be instrumental and objective where possible, such as barrier and hydration readings, rather than resting on how people say they feel about a product they know they are testing.
Until a study of that shape exists and has been reviewed by a qualified scientific reviewer, the honest position is the one on this page. We can tell you the ingredient is present, we can explain why magnesium is scientifically interesting, and we can be clear about what has not been shown. How this relates to AuraAnn today
AuraAnn Mineral Cream is a fragrance-free leave-on cream whose labeled active ingredient is colloidal oatmeal 1 percent, a recognized skin protectant. Magnesium aspartate appears in the ingredient list alongside zinc gluconate and copper gluconate. It is not the labeled active, and the benefit language we use for the product rests on the colloidal oatmeal and on our approved wording, not on the minerals.
We do not publish the concentration of any mineral in the formula, and we will not estimate one. We also will not describe magnesium aspartate as the reason the cream soothes eczema-prone skin, because that is not what the evidence supports. The mineral is there, we are willing to say so plainly, and we are equally willing to say that its contribution to how the product performs for you has not been demonstrated.
Products in development, including a shampoo, conditioner, mist, lip balm, face serum, and sunscreen, are not finalized. If any of them ever carries a magnesium-specific claim, that claim will come from testing that product, and this page will be updated to show the evidence behind it.MG-01, MG-02

Questions people ask
Does magnesium absorb through the skin?
There is no reliable evidence that meaningful amounts of magnesium cross healthy skin. A 2017 review in Nutrients examined this directly and concluded that the promotion of transdermal magnesium was not scientifically supported, noting that intact skin acts as a barrier and that the supporting studies were small and methodologically weak. A separate pilot study in 25 people found changes that did not reach statistical significance overall, only within a subgroup. That is a starting point for further research, not an established fact, and we do not claim absorption through the skin for any AuraAnn product.
Why is magnesium aspartate in AuraAnn Mineral Cream if the evidence is limited?
Magnesium aspartate is part of the mineral composition of the formula, alongside zinc gluconate and copper gluconate. Its presence reflects the formulation approach rather than a proven consumer benefit, and mineral salts do have real effects on how an emulsion thickens, holds together, and feels. We are comfortable telling you the ingredient is in the cream and explaining why magnesium is scientifically interesting. We are not comfortable telling you it does something for your skin, because that has not been shown for this product. The labeled active is colloidal oatmeal 1 percent.
What about the Dead Sea salt bathing research?
That research is real and worth knowing about. In a 2005 study, participants with atopic dry skin bathed one forearm in a 5 percent Dead Sea salt solution and the other in tap water over six weeks, and the salt bathed forearm showed better barrier readings, more hydration, and less roughness and redness. The important limits are that this was bathing rather than a cream, that the solution contained a mixture of sea minerals rather than magnesium alone, and that it involved a soak and a rinse. It cannot be carried across to a leave-on product.
Will magnesium in a cream help me sleep or relax?
No, and we will not suggest otherwise. Claims about sleep, calm, and relaxation come from research on dietary intake and oral supplementation, which reaches the body through the digestive tract. For a cream to affect sleep, a meaningful amount of magnesium would first have to cross the skin and reach the rest of the body, and that step is precisely what the published review found to be unsupported. Without it, the claim has nothing to stand on. AuraAnn Mineral Cream is a skincare product and we describe it only in skincare terms.
How much magnesium is in the product?
We do not publish concentrations for any mineral in AuraAnn Mineral Cream, and we will not estimate a figure. Ingredient lists on cosmetics are ordered by concentration down to 1 percent, after which the order is not required to reflect amount, so reading a number out of a list position would be guesswork. Publishing a number we have not verified and cannot support would be worse than saying nothing. What we can tell you is what appears on the label: magnesium aspartate is present, and the labeled active ingredient is colloidal oatmeal 1 percent.
Is magnesium aspartate different from magnesium oil or Epsom salt?
Yes. Magnesium is always combined with something else to form a salt, and the partner changes how the ingredient behaves. Magnesium oil is a concentrated magnesium chloride solution in water rather than an actual oil. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate and is used mainly for bathing. Magnesium aspartate pairs magnesium with aspartic acid. Because solubility, pH behavior, and formulation compatibility differ between these compounds, and because they are used in very different vehicles and contact times, evidence about one of them does not automatically apply to another.
Will AuraAnn ever make a magnesium claim?
Only if the evidence ever supports one for a specific finished product. That would require testing the actual formula against the same formula without the magnesium salt, with enough participants, a control, outcome measures set in advance, and assessment by evaluators who do not know which product each person received. General magnesium biology would not be enough, because it describes dietary intake rather than a cream on the skin. If that evidence is produced, this page will be updated to show it.
